We need world leaders meeting at next month’s UN Climate Summit (COP26) to deliver climate justice — via a Global Green New Deal that reorders our economic and political systems for people and planet. Currently, world leaders are continuing to make political decisions that increase corporate profits and line shareholders’ pockets; at the expense of the majority of people across the world, who face growing poverty, exploitation and oppression.
The climate crisis is already devastating the lives and livelihoods of people in the Global South, those least responsible for causing it. The UK government is refusing to do its fair share to reach global targets for reducing carbon emissions by 2030. What plans it does have to transition to ‘clean’ energy production are based on the unsustainable mining of resources in the Global South, and are awash with potential human rights abuses.
MPs play an essential role in holding the UK government to account and demonstrating the need and the will for serious action on climate justice, ahead of the COP26 Climate Summit. We need to bring pressure on the government in every way we can.
Demand that your MP represents you by calling on the UK government to pursue policies that; keep us below 1.5°c, tackle inequality and poverty, put public health and wellbeing first, use finite resources responsibly and sustainably, and uproot systemic injustice including colonialism, racism and patriarchy.
