Trade deals can affect everything from food standards to climate action to jobs. As currently written, they privilege corporate power. We need democratic control over these far-reaching deals.
The House of Lords has now passed an amendment that would give Parliament a say on trade deals including:
- meaningful vote on objectives at the start
- meaningful vote on the outcome at the end
- mandatory consultation with devolved administrations
However the government continues to insist none of this is needed, and we expect them to try and overturn it in the final stages when it returns to the Commons.
Can you email your MP to ask them to defend trade democracy in the Trade Bill?
