The richest 1% of people in the UK now have more wealth than the poorest 70% combined. Extreme wealth is spiralling out of control – while public services are crumbling and millions face rising costs. As the UK government cuts welfare payments and slashes overseas aid, billionaire fortunes grow untouched.
This isn’t just unfair – it’s harmful. It would take 1,500 years for one of us in the majority of the UK population – the 99% – to emit as much carbon as the world’s richest billionaires do in a single year. Extreme wealth accelerates climate breakdown, fuels inequality and concentrates power in the hands of the richest few.
It doesn’t have to be this way. A fair tax on the wealth of the super-rich could raise billions to fund the public services we all rely on, invest in action on climate, and support a more just global economy.
Spain and Switzerland have successfully introduced wealth taxes. The UK could do the same – and the UK public want it: three in four people in the UK support taxing the super-rich. It’s a matter of political will.
It’s time to take a stand – not just to raise revenue, but to stop the accumulation of extreme wealth altogether.
Tell your MP to demand a tax on the extreme wealth of the super-rich.
